Thank You, Gorman and Fay Robinson
The community of Mechanicsville would like to give special recognition to the memory of Gorman and Fay Robinson, lifelong residents of Mechanicsville, for their final donation to the Mechanicsville Sports Complex.
The Robinson family's involvement and generosity in this particular endeavor started years ago
when they offered to sell land, as needed, to the Mechanicsville Economic Development Committee at a discount to allow for economic expansion in the community. This led to the construction of a new elementary school for the North Cedar School District in 2007.
Having a new school was paramount, but the town had been without a ball diamond since the old school was closed. In 2011, a small committee started meeting monthly to plan the purchase and development of a community sports complex. The Economic Development Committee met with Gorman and he agreed to sell 5 acres to the city for this project. The project, laid out in phases, would initially require more than $130,000 in
donations to accommodate the land purchase,
engineering, excavation, planting, construction, fencing, parking, concrete, concessions, etc. Gorman and Fay soon after made a large cash donation toward the initial construction.
The complex has been a success and the committee recently made strides to complete one of the final phases initially planned, which was lighting both ball fields. Alliant Energy will be donating the poles and equipment to install the poles. The Gorman and Fay Robinson Estate has donated a generous amount of money to help pay for the cost of the lights, brackets and electrical work to make this happen. Installation is planned for this summer.
Thank you again in memory of Gorman and Fay, century-long residents of the Mechanicsville
community.
