Drake Relays: Fourth place is best boys’ area finish on opening day

DES MOINES — A trio of fourth-place finishers highlighted area boys' competitors on the opening day of the Drake Relays on Thursday at Drake Stadium.
Jack Pendergast of Cedar Rapids Prairie (3,200-meter run), Keith Keahna of South Tama (high jump) and Brady Sullivan of Waukon (shot put) earned fourth place in their respective events.
A junior, Pendergast ran in the top five throughout the race and finished in 9 minutes, 29.01 seconds. Tim Sindt of Ankeny was the champion in 9:14.64, pulling away from Dubuque Hempstead's David Holesinger with about 200 meters to go. Reece Smith of Garner GHV was second in 9:15.88.
Keahna is the defending Class 3A state champion. He cleared 6 feet, 5 inches.
Grant Brouwer of Sibley-Ocheyedan and Braeden Hoyer of Northeast both cleared 6-9, with Brouwer prevailing on fewer misses. Brouwer cleared 6-9 on his second attempt, Hoyer on his third.
Sullivan's best throw was his fifth — 55-10 3/4. Noah Fenske of New Hampton won it with an effort of 60-11 1/4, a little more than 2 feet over Logan Jones of Lewis Central. Iowa City West's Landon Green — the 4A state champion last year — was fifth at 54-6 3/4.

High jump — 1. Grant Brouwer (Sibley-Ocheyedan), 6-9; 2. Braeden Hoyer (Northeast), 6-9. 3. Bryce Albaugh (Cedar Falls), 6-7; 4. Keith Keahna (South Tama), 6-5; 5. Aguek Deng (West Des Moines Valley), 6-5; 6. Carter Morton (Greene County), 6-5; 7. (tie) Landon Kooiker (Fairfield) and Sam Beatty (Mount Pleasant), 6-5.
