Class 3A

Region 6: Benton Community 6, No. 6 Eddyville EBF 3

Angie Gorkow looked at the scoreboard and still couldn’t believe what she was seeing.

Well, she should believe it.

Gorkow homered and drove in four runs, and Benton Community knocked off its second consecutive top-10 opponent in a 6-3 win over No. 6 Eddyville EBF in Monday’s Class 3A regional final.

The Bobcats (27-14), who beat No. 10 Solon to set this matchup, will play in the state tournament for the fifth time in five years, but the first since winning the 3A title two years ago.

“We were underdogs tonight, so we came in with nothing to lose,” said Gorkow, whose three-run homer capped a four-run second inning to put the Bobcats ahead to stay. “We were still talking about (not making it to state) last year, but it was like, ‘OK, it’s time to go back.”

Jessie Havlik also drove in a run for the Bobcats, who ended the season of last year’s 2A state runner-up. EBF retires 30-8.

Grace Martensen earned the win in relief of starter Kate Buscher, who worked three innings before being lifted after two hits leading off the fourth.

Region 8: No. 1 Davenport Assumption 7, Mount Vernon 0

The Mount Vernon softball team was well aware of what it was up against.

Standing between the Mustangs and a berth in the state tournament for the fourth year in a row was top-ranked Davenport Assumption, the defending Class 3A state champion with a pitcher throwing who had lost just once all season.

Tall task indeed.

“They’re a very balanced team,” Mount Vernon Coach Robin Brand said. “They’re quick. They can hit the ball. They’ve got good pitchers. They’re a good team, so we would have had to play one of our best games in order to do that.”
