CEDAR RAPIDS — Iowa City High’s offensive explosion was a surprise. So is the Little Hawks’ next opponent.

Carey Koenig drove in five runs, and City High pounded out 18 hits in a 16-8 triumph over 15th-ranked Cedar Rapids Prairie in a Class 5A softball regional semifinal Saturday night at Prairie High School.

“We didn’t hit the ball hard the last time we played them, but we squared it up all night tonight,” City Coach Jeff Koenig said. “This is a great win for our program, a great next step for us.”

City High (23-18) will host Linn-Mar (23-19) in a regional final at 7 p.m. Tuesday. The Lions stunned No. 2 Cedar Rapids Kennedy, 4-3, in 10 innings.

“I’m a little surprised,” Carey Koenig said. “I knew Linn-Mar had potential. There are a lot of upsets out there this time of year. We’ll be ready to play with a chance to go to state.”

Prairie (28-13) swept City in a regular-season doubleheader, but the Little Hawks jolted the hosts with 13 runs in the first three innings — four in the first, four in the second, five in the third.

The offensive heroes were many:

• Leadoff hitter Ayana Lindsey reached base four times and scored on each occasion.

• Carey Koenig was 4-for-4, plus a walk, and drove in five.

• Sydney Fellows recorded three hits.

• Keli Potter was 3-for-5 and put an exclamation point on it with a seventh-inning home run.

• No. 9 hitter Makayla Ribble notched three hits, two for doubles.

“We’ve been hitting a lot the last four days,” Potter said. “(Prairie starting pitcher Nicole Sullivan) went inside on us a lot last time we played them. She went outside more tonight, so we had to adjust.”

Patience also was key.

“I waited to attack my pitch,” Carey Koenig said. “I was going to hit the one I wanted to hit.”

Prairie scored five times in the bottom of the third inning to climb within 13-6 and gain some momentum, but couldn’t get any closer. The Hawks collected 15 hits, four by Morgan Lewis.
