More Iowa City West stars shine in regional girls' swimming meet

Roghair, Martin, Ernst carry Women of Troy to regional title

MARION — Moments after Byron Butler and his Iowa City West team climbed out of the pool after celebrating a regional girls’ swimming title, he was anxious to talk about one of his top swimmers.

Oh, he had plenty of kind words for stars Aurora Roghair and Scarlet Martin, but it was junior Lily Ernst who had the West coach most excited.

“She had an amazing day,” Butler said after the Women of Troy took the regional title Saturday at the Linn-Mar Aquatics Center. “She had major hip surgery less than a year ago and came back in less than six months. She was fantastic today.”

Ernst’s performance provided much-needed support for West. Martin and Roghair both won two events and were both on two winning relays. Ernst finished second to Martin in both the 200-yard individual medley and 100 butterfly as West took top team honors with 399 points, just ahead of Cedar Rapids Kennedy (375). Linn-Mar was third with 277 points.

“Lily was fantastic today,” said Roghair, who was named the regional athlete of the year. “She has worked so hard to come back and we really needed her to win the meet.”

Butler was even more impressed with Ernst’s times because, as is the case with Roghair and Martin, she hasn’t fully rested yet, saving that for the state meet, which will be held Friday and Saturday in Marshalltown.

“She was right under her lifetime best in the 200 IM and her 100 fly was one of her best in-season times,” Butler said. “She hasn’t really rested yet and I am excited to see what she can do next week.”

Roghair won the 200 free in 1:52.46, 7 seconds ahead of runner-up Maddie Gannon of Cedar Rapids Kennedy. She was just as impressive winning the 500 in 5:01.10, more than 11 seconds ahead of runner-up Jill Hughes of Cedar Rapids Washington.

“It was a real good meet today,” Roghair said. “We had great performances from so many girls today.”

West also won the 200 and 400 freestyle relays.

Iowa City High won the other five events. Carly Weigel was a double winner, taking the 100 freestyle and 100 backstroke. City High also won the 200 medley relay and got wins from Trinity Sadecky in the 50 freestyle and Olivia Masterson in 1:05.76.

Kennedy used great balance and depth to take second. Interim co-coach Igor Sanchez was pleased with the performance.

“Our girls really swam some great times,” he said. “I hope we can continue to improve for next week.”

The Cougars’ best finish was a second in the 400 freestyle relay.

The Iowa City West coaching staff was named the regional coaching staff of the year.
