IOWA CITY — Iowa City Regina is witnessing what can happen with a full season of Ashton Cook.

After missing four games last season, the first in 15 years in which the Regals missed the Iowa high school football playoffs, Cook is healthy and flinging the ball around with the best in Class 1A.

“It has been really fun,” said Cook, who accounted for four first-half touchdowns as the 10th-ranked Regals held off North Linn, 37-28, in a District 6 prep football game Friday night at Regal Field. “My team has been doing a really good job. The line and receivers and running backs. I am excited to see what this team can do.”

Cook opened the scoring for Regina (6-1, 3-0) with a 43-yard touchdown pass to senior receiver Josh Dutchik in the first quarter. After North Linn tied the game at 7-7, Cook directed a 20-0 burst in the second frame with TD passes to Chase Becker and Alec Wick, plus his own 1-yard TD run.

Cook finished the game with 291 passing yards. He entered Friday night ranked second in 1A in both yards and TDs through the air and now has 1,694 yards and 19 TDs through seven games.

“He has been phenomenal,” said Regina Coach Marv Cook, Ashton’s father. “He is doing a great job. (Regina offensive coordinator) Coach (Ed) Hinkel is putting him in a lot of positions where he can be successful. They are getting on the same page.”

Wick entered the game leading 1A in receptions and receiving TDs and finished with eight catches for 164 yards and the one score. Dutchik caught four balls for 88 yards, while junior tailback Theo Kolie kept the North Linn defense honest with 121 rushing yards and a TD.

North Linn (5-2, 1-2) stayed within striking distance behind a monster day from senior quarterback Austin Miller, who ran for 268 yards and four TDs.

The Lynx will visit East Marshall next week, while the Regals entertain Jesup with a likely winner-take-all game against No. 1 Dike-New Hartford looming in two weeks.

“We just need to focus on Jesup right now,” Ashton Cook said. “Have a good week of practice and we will figure it out when we get there.”
