MARION — Linn-Mar and Urbandale both made their share of mistakes Friday night at Linn-Mar Stadium.
In the end, the Lions defense couldn’t make one final stand.
Alex Economos connected on a 28-yard field goal with 1:40 remaining to edge the Lions, 17-16 in a Class 4A non-district game.
Coach Paul James’ Lions put up a valiant effort on defense, picking off two passes and recovering three fumbles. However, the Lions also lost a pair of fumbles.
Urbandale (2-2) was dealt a blow on the first play from scrimmage when starting quarterback J.D. Colby was picked off by Cameron Walker. Colby suffered a leg injury while tackling Walker and was taken off the field on a cart and did not return.
Linn-Mar took advantage. Marcus Orr found Brandon Raus with a 4-yard TD pass and the Lions led 7-0 less than two minutes into the game. The lead grew to 10-0 on an Austin Brinning 30-yard field goal midway through the second quarter.
The Lions were in control and driving when Orr fumbled and the J-Hawks recovered. Reserve quarterback Ty Langenberg hit Will Pattison on a 31-yard fade pass into the end zone with 1:33 left in the half, cutting the gap to 10-7.
Urbandale took the lead in the third quarter. Harrison Waylee appeared to be going in for a 16-yard TD run, but fumbled at the 1 and the ball rolled into the end zone where Lucas Strain fell on it.

Late in the third quarter, the J-Hawks lost the ball inside their own 20 and on the next play, Orr hit Drew Strottman on a 19-yard scoring play. Linn-Mar went for two and the run failed, leaving the Lions up 16-14.
Urbandale drove down inside the 20, but was stopped on a fourth-and-1 with just under five minutes left. But the Lions had to punt and Urbandale drove down to the Lions 21, where Economos hit the game winner.
Orr was picked off around the Lions 45 with 24 seconds remaining.
