Iowa high school football roundup: Week 2 area scores, stats and more

The Week 2 Iowa high school football slate was full of more marquee non-district matchups.

Here’s a look at all of our area coverage, plus scores and stats from around Eastern Iowa.

Iowa City Liberty 18, Waterloo East 6

The Lightning won before a boisterous crowd in the first varsity football home opener at second-year Liberty High School.

Liberty (1-1) started the game with the first of two successful onside pooch kickoffs in the first quarter, which delighted the home crowd.

Jack Ankenbauer finished the game with 35 rushes for 125 yards.

West Delaware 25, Marion 21

Fifteen plays, 71 yards. Clutch.

That march, then a final stand, allowed Class 3A fifth-ranked West Delaware to rally past Marion, 25-21.

Caleb Kehrli rushed for 237 yards on 41 carries, and Nick Casey had a hand in all four of West Delaware’s touchdowns — three running, one passing — as the Hawks improved to 2-0.

Cedar Rapids Xavier 45, Decorah 3

Cedar Rapids Xavier was prepared for a fight.

The Saints were aware of Decorah’s hard-nosed and physical reputation and the game started in a bare-knuckle style brawl they expected. After absorbing a couple shots early, Xavier turned a battle into a beat down.

Class 3A top-ranked Xavier exploded for 24 points in the second quarter and dropped Decorah, 45-3. The Saints won their 29th straight regular-season game and handed the Vikings their worst loss since a 42-7 defeat to Harlan in the 2004 state final.

Cedar Rapids Prairie 49, Pleasant Valley 42

Cedar Rapids Prairie’s high-powered offense looked good at times and sputtered as well.

But the No. 6 Hawks had just enough to hold off a pesky Pleasant Valley team, 49-42, Friday night at John Wall Field.

Senior Keegan Simmons lugged the ball 29 times for 267 yards and four scores for the Hawks, who needed every one of those points to hold off the Spartans.

Cedar Rapids Kennedy 33, Linn-Mar 7

Class 4A’s ninth-ranked team looked good on both sides of the ball in a 33-7 win over Linn-Mar. Cairron Hendred had 170 yards rushing and three TDs, running back mate Max White added 103 and two scores as Kennedy moved to 2-0.

Someone needs to come up with a nickname for the two. Hendred is a home run hitter who can score on any play, White a diminutive sophomore who runs hard, harder and hardest.

Benton Community 30, Cascade 12

A stiff south wind welcomed Benton Community as it took the field Friday night.

That proved to be just a whisper compared to the Bobcats air attack. Benton Community racked up 138 yards through the air to down Class 1A No. 5 Cascade, 30-12.

Clayton Krousie connected with five different receivers, but none more so than Nathan Michels. The 6-foot-4 senior grabbed six passes for 65 yards and a touchdown.

Highland 18, Alburnett 8

Highland broke loose against No. 6 Alburnett, using a number of key third-and-long conversions to leave with a big 18-8 win.

Having Trey Lasek didn’t hurt, either. The Huskies quarterback did everything but drive the bus, accounting for 200 yards of offense and a pair of interceptions and a fumble recovery on defense.

“We’ve been playing Regina the last couple of years,” Lasek said. “We knew we weren’t going to see anything we haven’t seen before. With this big senior class, we just wanted to punch them in the mouth right away.”

The first quarter featured five punts and no first downs.

Highland punter Brady Hahn was the star of the opening frame, pinning the Pirates with deep punts.

Buried in their own territory late in the quarter, Alburnett’s Mason Wickman fumbled and Lasek pounced on it. Facing third-and-goal at the 11, Cory Stewart got open and went to the ground to haul in a low pass from Lasek for the first score.

Lasek went deep downfield to Mason McFarland in the middle of the second quarter. With a defender on him step-for-step, McFarland hauled it in for 31 yards. Facing third-and-14, Lasek found McFarland again for 16. Cole Adamson rumbled into the end zone from 14 yards out.

On their next possession, on third-and-18, Lasek took a quarterback draw, found space up the middle and raced 74 yards for an 18-0 lead.

Bettendorf 10, Iowa City West 7

It won’t completely erase the sting of last year’s state semifinal setback, but the Bulldogs earned some redemption.

Quarterback Carter Bell passed for 146 yards and a touchdown. He also ran for 92 yards, including five third-down conversions.

West (1-1) trailed 10-0 before Joseph Kuehn connected with Jalen Gaudet for a 90-yard touchdown on the final play of the third quarter. The Trojans had one offensive possession to try and snatch the lead, but they were forced to punt.

Kuehn passed for 163 yards, 124 of those to Gaudet.
