Iowa high school boys' basketball rankings: The Gazette's first 2018-19 edition

CEDAR RAPIDS — The first one is always the most difficult.

Even waiting the first week to see results doesn’t make the first boys’ basketball rankings of the season any easier. For better or worse, your top-ranked teams according to The Gazette are Iowa City West, Oskaloosa, Western Christian and Grand View Christian.

Grand View Christian in Class 1A and Oskaloosa in 3A were probably the easiest picks of the four.

Oskaloosa (2-0) lost in last year’s state championship game to Glenwood and returns 6-foot-9 Northern Iowa signee Cole Henry and 6-11 Xavier Foster, considered one of the top juniors in the entire country. The Indians haven’t been completely convincing early, beating Fairfield by only two points and Grinnell by 13.

GVC actually lost a game last week, albeit at West, 64-56. The Thunder have won two straight 1A championships and feature Drake signee Issa Samake and fellow 6-7 Mali native Harouna Sissoko, who transferred in this season and is considered a Division I college player.

Iowa City West (2-0) lost in last year’s 4A championship game and has University of Iowa signee Patrick McCaffery. The Trojans are followed closely in the initial rankings by fellow 2018 state tournament qualifiers North Scott and Waukee.

Class 2A’s No. 1 is Western Christian, always a safe bet for the top spot. The Wolfpack have not played a game, yet.

Wamac Conference members Maquoketa and West Delaware are back to back in 3A at fourth and fifth, respectively. They are a combined 5-0 early.
