North Scott dampens Andy Courtney's debut at Cedar Rapids Kennedy

Lancers jump all over Kennedy, 66-42

CEDAR RAPIDS — The first chapter of the Andy Courtney era has been written.

“I’m just glad it’s over and out of the way,” Courtney said. “This gives us an opportunity to look in the mirror and see what we need to work on.”

Class 4A second-ranked North Scott gave Cedar Rapids Kennedy a glimpse of what excellence looks like, dominating the first three quarters and coasting to a 66-42 non-conference girls’ basketball victory Tuesday night at Kennedy High School.

The veteran Lancers (1-0) were in anything but pre-Thanksgiving form, leading by as many as 39 points late in the third quarter.

“This is by far the best offensive group I’ve coached,” North Scott Coach T.J. Case said. “We’ve got a lot of weapons we can put out there.”

They have a handy inside presence in Grace Boffeli, who paced the Lancers with 17 points and nine rebounds. And they have a backcourt posse that can hurt you from all over. Five different players had at least one 3-pointer, led by four from Presley Case in a 16-point outing.

North Scott scored on its first four possessions for a 10-4 lead, then pushed it to 25-10 after one quarter and 44-17 by halftime.

The margin was at its largest at 65-26 late in the third quarter before Sadie Powell led a Kennedy surge that made it more respectable by game’s end.

Powell tallied 20 points to lead all scorers, including 11 in the fourth quarter. Camryn Ray added 12 points. Both are juniors.

“Sadie did what she’s been doing for us,” said Courtney, who was elevated to head varsity coach from the freshman level after Tony Vis resigned following last season. “And Camryn ... that was good to see. She never shoots the ball in practice, and the girls have to get on her about that.”

North Scott enjoyed a 28-13 rebounding advantage. Guard Rylie Rucker injured a knee late in the third quarter, but Case was confident that it was minor.

Tuesday’s game was the first of a long stretch of pre-Christmas toughies for the Cougars. They host Iowa City High next week.

“It doesn’t get easier,” Courtney said. “But I know that before the next game, we’ll have better focus, better effort and better energy.”
