Iowa and Iowa State are not in the conversation for College Football Playoff berths at the end of the season. But both the Hawkeyes and Cyclones have resumes good enough to occupy spots in 2018’s first CFP Top 25.

Iowa (6-2) is No. 16 and Iowa State (4-3) is No. 24 in the committee’s rankings, unveiled Tuesday night on ESPN. For reference, the Hawkeyes are No. 18 in the Coaches Poll and No. 19 in the Associated Press Poll while the Cyclones aren’t ranked in either of the other polls.

Alabama holds the No. 1 distinction in the CFP rankings, followed by Clemson, LSU and Notre Dame. Alabama and LSU square off this week.

Iowa is 1-1 against CFP Top 25 teams this season, beating Iowa State 13-3 and losing 30-24 to No. 14 Penn State last week. No other teams on the remaining schedule are ranked.

Michigan is the top Big Ten team at No. 5, followed by No. 10 Ohio State, Penn State and Iowa, which takes on Purdue at 2:30 p.m. Saturday in West Lafayette, Ind.

Iowa State is 1-2 against CFP ranked teams, with losses to Iowa and No. 7 Oklahoma and a 30-14 victory over No. 13 West Virginia. The Cyclones, who face Kansas this week, still have No. 17 Texas on the schedule Nov. 17.
