Stanford defensive tackle and Linn-Mar product David Parry was selected in fifth round by the Indianapolis Colts in Saturday's NFL draft.
Parry (6-foot-1, 308 pounds) joins a team with only three defensive tackles on its roster. The Colts employ primarily a 3-4 alignment, which fits Parry at nose tackle. Indianapolis traded up 14 spots and gave up a seventh-round pick to select Parry.
'I played in the 3-4 at Stanford for the last five years of my career and I'm going to contribute any way they want me to do it,” he told Colts.com.
Parry began his career as a walk-on before becoming a starter for the Cardinal. He played in 43 games and combined for 53 tackles and 12.5 tackles for loss his final two seasons. He registered 4.5 sacks and six hurries as a senior. He was a two-time Pac-12 all-academic selection. He also was a finalist for the Bulsworth Trophy, which goes to the nation's best player who became his career as a walk-on. He was a first-team all-state selection while at Linn-Mar.
Dan Shonka, general manager and national scout for Ourlads Scouting Services, wrote that Parry 'is tough to block with his strength and leverage play. Good short area quickness and plays with a relentless high motor. Strong at the point of attack.”
Parry said he hadn't had much contact with the Colts leading up to the draft but described his fit as 'perfect.”
