Iowa continues to set hospitalization and death records seven months into battling the COVID-19 pandemic. My heart breaks for the loved ones of those who have died from the virus.
How many more Iowans must die before we listen to science? How many more businesses will have to close their doors while we wait out this pandemic? Without a mask mandate, deaths will continue to rise and our economy will continue to free-fall.
The White House coronavirus task force has been urging state officials to take action for months, and it’s beyond time they do so. Studies show that in states where masks and social distancing are required, cases are declining. Iowa never implemented the preventive measures and for thousands of our friends and neighbors, it’s too late. We must act now to save lives.
While scientists are working around the clock to develop a vaccine, we are still months away from reaching the audacious 12-to-18-month vaccine development goal researchers set in January. Until then, it is critical that leaders protect the safety and well-being of Iowans by supporting a mask mandate and continuing to listen to the scientists and researchers who will lead us through this pandemic.
