High school graduates inspire, pay it forward

To the editor:
During my son's recent graduation from Washington High School, I glanced at the empty chairs in the arena. I thought, what a shame that more could not see the ceremony.
Since my wife Ann has had the honor of serving on the Cedar Rapids School Board for 16 years, our family has had the privilege of seeing and hearing the incredible talent our community has produced in our children.
I know that not all is well with our school system. Yes, there is much that needs to improve. But there are also shining and sometimes stunning examples of our highest dreams and ideals. One of those occurred when senior class president Fatima Elsheikh took the podium during Kennedy High School's graduation and reminded the audience of the courage and selflessness of Drew Wall, class of 2015.
Drew lost his battle with cancer early in his sophomore year. His courageous life of faith and service inspired the entire class to wear purple tassels and ribbons during the graduation ceremony. But it did more than that.
It inspired the class to build a house alongside Habitat for Humanity. And it inspired Fatima to say, 'There is nothing more beautiful than someone who goes out of their way to make life beautiful for others.”
Please take the time to see and appreciate the wonderful examples provided to us of the selflessness and service of this next generation. Drew's life changed his classmates' lives and now his classmates will help change ours.
