Robinson: Time to work together and be fearless

Jorel Robinson is a candidate for Cedar Rapids City Council at-large.

Running, every day I run. Most of the time running on the trail by my house. I could drive or catch a ride but I’d rather run to work or ride a bike everyday. Running is healthy, running gives me clarity and time to think. I’m always running toward a destination or a goal. The only time I don’t run is from problems, I run toward them, now is the time for me to run for office. But this time I’m not running for me, and I’m also not running alone. Let’s run together! Now is the time to be fearless.

I’d like to see our city be a place people want to bring their families and or raise their children like I am. I’d like to see us be a place where instead of only focusing on the money we start to look at ways we can truly enrich the lives of our residents. It’s an interesting time to be in politics, everything is partisan, households are divided, I owe no favors to big money developers and corporate lobbyist.

My goal is to unite and help build the future of Cedar Rapids with the people being most important.

I’m a full-time employee at Go-Daddy, and co-founder of Big Bang Foundation. I’m also a board member of Horizons, a Family Service Alliance as well as serving on the Cedar Rapids Parks, Waterways and Recreation Commission.

Growing up in Wellington Heights, I’m no stranger to gun violence. I have firsthand experience on the impact it has on our community. I would be one of only members of council who grew up and still lives in this community. It’s going to take more than outsiders and reports to help combat the recent spikes in gun violence. I have and will continue to lead with this issue. Instead of a donation or political contribution, I’m asking for a share, a like or even a message to discuss issues that are important to you.

I have dealt with a (slum) landlord, had to make a deal with Alliant Energy to keep my lights on, been to a food pantry. I know the stress of being a parent trying to get through. I know these barriers very well and will do my best to help where we can. No matter the issue in front of you, you must face it with confidence. Never look back.
