AbouAssaly: Overcoming divisions, building consensus

Nick AbouAssaly is a candidate for Marion mayor.

I believe in Marion, its people and its amazing potential. My goal as mayor is to build a welcoming and inclusive community where people feel valued, businesses thrive and all residents have greater opportunities to achieve their own goals and enjoy an unequaled quality of life.

I have been part of the Marion community for more than 40 years and have worked in numerous capacities to be a positive force and a voice for progress. During my term as mayor, our City has seen an increase in high quality development and initiatives that serve the needs of all residents. I have spent thousands of hours meeting with individuals and groups, listening to ideas and concerns, solving issues and encouraging residents to contribute and help shape the future of our community.

I am proud to lead a City Council that engages in fact-based decision making, serves the best interests of Marion residents and maintains a high standard of professionalism, transparency, ethical behavior and responsiveness for our city’s leaders and staff. Together we have overcome divisions, built consensus and brought our community together around a common vision. I am humbled to be endorsed by all six current City Council members as well as both of my opponents in the 2015 mayoral race.

Marion has made tremendous progress in the past four years, receiving many state and national awards and earning recognition as one of America’s best small cities. Uptown Marion has become a recognized destination for shopping, dining, culture and entertainment. With more than $130 Million in economic development activity, nearly 800 new jobs created and the addition of new parks, trails and significant quality of life amenities, we have a lot to celebrate.

Our city’s financial standing is strong, and our AA1 bond rating places Marion among an elite group of cities in our state. We have been able to address the infrastructure needs of our growing city and provide excellent services while maintaining a property tax levy rate that is lower than those of other cities in our metro area.

I am grateful for the trust that voters have placed in me and am seeking reelection to keep Marion on a path of growth and positive momentum. Our community made great progress during my first term as mayor, but we’ve only just begun. The sky is not the limit.
