An Iowa City man faces multiple felony charges stemming from a fight involving a gun.
According to an Iowa City police arrest report Dante Tyrone Beard, 25, had an initial interaction with officers on April 25, 2018 when Beard arrived at a hospital in Iowa City with a gunshot wound to his leg and testicle.
When police met with Beard he said he had been robbed at gunpoint somewhere in Iowa City, but could not provide additional details.
According to the release, at that time police were able to identify the individual who had dropped Beard off at the hospital, and that individual told police that Beard had “shot himself when he was adjusting the gun in his waistband.”
Further investigation during the April incident uncovered that Beard had a hole in his underwear and shorts, but not his pants, meaning the gun was likely fired from inside his pants, which would be consistent with Beard shooting himself.
On a subsequent date, May 29, 2018, officers responded to a fight in progress involving a gun, and the responding officers found Beard inside the home and learned he was allegedly the one possessing the gun.
Officers seized and searched Beard’s phone via a search warrant where officers located numerous photos of Beard possessing guns, drugs, and large sums of money, along with texts about dealing drugs and hiding his gun from a houseguest.
Beard has a previous conviction of a felony on August 27, 2015 in Indiana, and therefore is prohibited from possessing firearms or ammunition.

Beard was ultimately arrested on August 17, 2018 at approximately 3:45 p.m. when officers executed a traffic stop of Beard’s vehicle.
The officers had a valid search warrant at the time for the Beard’s person, vehicle, and residence.
Additionally the registration on Beard’s vehicle was expired.
During the traffic stop at the 500 block of S. Gilbert Street in Iowa City, Beard was asked if he had anything illegal on him.
According to the release he said, “Yeah I got a gun, man. It’s in my car.”
Beard also claimed the gun was someone else’s, though he could not provide any additional information.
A subsequent search of Beard’s residence uncovered additional ammunition. The gun’s serial number showed it was stolen out of Merrillville, IN.
Beard now faces three felony charges: two charges of control of a firearm by a felon, and one charge of trafficking in stolen weapons.
Beard has been transported to the Johnson County Jail.
