Police investigating Sunday night shooting that injured bystander

The Cedar Rapids Police Department is investigating a shooting incident that occurred around 7 p.m. Sunday near the 100 block of 15th St. NE.

The police department said officers responded to reports of a woman who had been shot in the leg, according to the release. When they arrived, officers found a 39-year-old woman who appeared to be suffering from gunshot wound to the thigh.

Through their investigation, police said it was determined shots were fired from a vehicle toward an adult male who was walking in the area. The woman, police said, was a bystander and not the intended target.

Police said a side window of a Discount Liquor store was also struck by a bullet and shattered.

Police said the wound was considered non-life threatening. Officers provided care until the was transported to University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics.

Investigators canvassed the area, collecting shell casings and looking for witnesses and additional evidence, police said.

No further information is known at this time. This is an ongoing investigation and further information will be released as it develops.
