What are the three most important issues facing Iowans, and how would you address them?

• The privatization of Medicaid is hurting all Iowans. We need to return control of Medicaid to the state.

• Discretionary spending needs to be returned to pre-2013 levels. We give away too many tax breaks to corporations that are not holding up their end of the bargain.

• Workers’ rights and safety need to be returned to their pre-2016 status. Public employees should be able to bargain collectively for all of their benefits and safety standards.

Do you believe the state should increase the minimum wage? If yes, to what level?

Yes. The State should return the minimum wage to the local municipal or county governments. Ultimately, I support a $15-per-hour minimum wage.

Would you vote to roll back the state income tax cuts passed last session? Would you expand them?

I would roll back the tax cuts on the wealthiest Iowans. I would cut discretionary spending.

Would you vote to end or phase out the property tax “backfill” for local governments?

The property tax backfill for local governments is necessary to offset the property tax money they lost when Republicans cut commercial property taxes to the bone. I would not vote to end or phase out the backfill until commercial property taxes are raised.

Would you vote to ban automated traffic cameras/enforcement devices? If no, would you favor bringing them under state regulation?

I would vote to ban traffic cameras/enforcement devices. I believe in an engaged law enforcement agency.

Would you vote to expand Iowa’s current medical cannabis law? Legalize marijuana?

I would expand Iowa’s medical cannabis laws and legalize marijuana for personal/recreational use.

Should Iowa amend the state Constitution to protect the right to bear arms beyond current language? Would you support a “constitutional carry” change to Iowa’s firearm permit system that would significantly expand gun rights?

I would not amend the state Constitution beyond its current language. I believe the Second Amendment to the U.S. Constitution is the prevailing instrument for gun control.

Would you support giving counties local control to regulate livestock facilities? Would you favor a moratorium on new large CAFO construction?

I would favor a moratorium on all CAFO construction and a return to more traditional farming methods. We are seeing the devastation of property values, rivers, lakes and streams across Iowa.

What are your thoughts on increasing funding for public education? Would you vote to extend 1-cent SAVE sales tax for school infrastructure until 2049?

Funding our public schools has to be a priority for this state again. I would vote to re-establish the requirement that supplemental state aid is set at 4 percent per year and that it be set 18 months in advance. I would vote to extend the 1-cent SAVE sales tax for school infrastructure until 2049 or longer.

Would you expand or repeal Iowa’s law barring doctors from performing an abortion once a fetal heartbeat is detected?

I would repeal the fetal heartbeat law. This law and the 20-week abortion ban before it are unconstitutional breaches of a woman’s right to autonomy or control over her own body.
