CEDAR RAPIDS — After more than 20 months of back and forth, a new outdoor retail store under the Gander brand name has opened in Cedar Rapids.

Gander Outdoors, the successor company to Gander Mountain, held a soft opening this past weekend for its store at 2140 Edgewood Rd. SW. The store will hold a grand opening event starting at 9 a.m. Saturday, June 30, to mark the official beginning of the 31,000-square-foot location.

The Cedar Rapids location is the only planned Gander Outdoors for Iowa, the company said in a news release.

The store’s opening marks a return for the Gander brand to Cedar Rapids and at a familiar location. Back in September 2016, the then-Gander Mountain company said it would move its Edgewood Road store operation to a new 52,000-square-foot building on Blairs Ferry Road NE.

A few months later, Gander Mountain filed for bankruptcy. Its assets later were acquired by Camping World CEO Marcus Lemonis, who rebranded the chain as Gander Outdoors.

There then were months of speculation over whether Gander would actually occupy the Blairs Ferry Road location, with the newly constructed building remaining vacant in the interim. Gander Outdoors eventually announced it instead would occupy the old Gander location on Edgewood.

Rockwell Collins since has said it plans to use the Blairs Ferry Road building for its Child Development Center.
