Taking a wetland for construction project requires creating a new one
May. 10, 2010 9:55 am
CEDAR RAPIDS - A jurisdiction can alter or destroy an existing wetland to make way for a road or bridge project, but, by federal law, must create a new wetland elsewhere.
That happened, for instance, back in 2007 when the city created two wetlands - one in Seminole Valley Park to replace what had been lost along Edgewood Road SW; and one along a new stretch of 33rd Avenue SW to replace what the new construction there had eliminated.
This week, the City Council will vote to do the same: It will create a new wetland at 18th Street SW and 33rd Avenue SW to replace what is being lost in the construction of a new Sixth Street SW bridge over Prairie Creek.
