Hawkeye Labor Council takes another shot for runoff; backs Saylor and continues McGrane backing
Nov. 24, 2009 4:22 pm
Hawkeye Labor Council, an umbrella organization of area labor unions, has endorsed candidate Aaron Saylor in the runoff election Dec. 1 for an at-large council seat.
The council had endorsed at-large candidates Chuck Swore and Nick Duffy in the Nov. 3 general election, not Saylor. Swore won one of the two at-large seats, and Saylor and Don Karr Jr. bested Duffy and now are facing off in the Dec. 1 runoff.
Saylor, 28, is an investment Realtor with Iowa Realty Commercial and Karr, 64, is longtime owner of Affordable Plumbing and Remodeling.
The labor council earlier announced its support for District 3 council member Jerry McGrane. McGrane, 70, faces a runoff Dec. 1 against Pat Shey, 50, a current at-large council member. McGrane is a retired former railroad and factory worker, and Shey is an attorney and small business owner.
Jerry Nowadzky, president of the labor council, announced the Saylor endorsement on Tuesday.
Nowadzky said the labor council is eager to see more good-paying jobs come to and stay in the city. The council also wants to see the City Council back project labor agreements.
