The Senate and the House approved a continuing resolution urging the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to reconsider its denial of funds to four rural electrical cooperatives and municipal utilities in the state following snow and ice storms. FEMA denied $19 million in disaster relief last year stating the electric companies hadn't conducted a thorough test of their utility lines. Sen. Matt McCoy, D-Des Moines, said he was “stunned when FEMA decided to dramatically change the rules on disaster aid” and denied the funding. He said such action would have a critical impact on electrical cooperatives and their consumers.
