Council seeks bids to demolish the First Street Parkade; FEMA set to pay the city about $1 million for use on another project

CEDAR RAPIDS - The First Street Parkade, which had been slated for demolition before the flood, will be coming down.
The City Council last night voted to seek bids for the demolition.
An engineering analysis of the parking ramp shows that it sustained possible structural damage in the June 2008 flood, according to a City Council memorandum.
The Federal Emergency Management Agency has agreed to pay the city about $1 million for the ramp because it is not suitable for reuse. The city can't use the site for future parking if it uses the FEMA funds tied to the existing ramp elsewhere, Greg Eyerly, the city's flood-recovery director, pointed out last night.
