Worth the risk

Nine days before 2009 ends, Iowa is on the verge of having one of its lowest years for traffic fatalities.
Two days before Christmas, an approaching major winter storm has the potential to create tragedy on our roads.
What lousy timing, Mother Nature.
Heading into last weekend, Iowa's traffic fatality count for the year stood at 364. The last time it was close to that low was in 2004, when the final tally was at 388 - the fewest road deaths since 366 in 1945. This also could be the second-straight year with the total well below the 10-year average.
That's a welcome trend. Transportation officials credit highway improvements, more drivers using safe driving practices and the recession and high gas prices that may have convinced more drivers to slow down, conserve gas or drive less.
The Christmas holiday period can spike the number of highway deaths quickly, however. It's the third-deadliest time of the year.
And with heavy snow, freezing rain and sleet forecast for much of Iowa over the next three days, the danger could be extreme.
We understand the desire to visit friends and families during this traditional time. But please take precautions. Check the road reports (call 511 or go online at www.511ia.org).
If conditions are poor, ask yourself: Is the additional risk to you and your passengers worth making the trip?
If you do travel, be sure you have enough warm clothing, blankets and emergency supplies in the vehicle. Buckle up, of course. Let's all do our best to ensure a safe holiday.
