The general election may be months away, but today's voting opportunity is no less important for civic-minded people.
Today is when members of political parties select the candidates from which all voters can choose on that November ballot.
Your participation in today's primary election is critical to help choose candidates for state and local offices. Most excuses for not voting don't cut it.
Not affiliated with a political party? You can change your registration at the polls, then change it before the general election if you like.
Not a registered voter? Take advantage of Iowa's same-day registration - just bring a driver's license with your current address; for other accepted forms of identification, call your county auditor or check www.iowavotes.gov.
In short, there are few good reasons not to exercise your important right and duty today to vote.
Our elected officials will be struggling with a number of complicated issues during this next term in office. It's critical we hire qualified, dedicated people for the job.
Three Democrats are vying to run against U.S. Sen. Chuck Grassley; four Republicans have thrown in their names in the race against U.S. 2nd District Congressman Dave Loebsack.
Republicans will choose from three candidates to determine who will run against Gov. Chet Culver.
There are dozens of important races for county and statewide offices and legislative seats, as well.
Don't feel like you know enough about the candidates or issues? There still is time.
The Gazette and KCRG-TV9 have put together information about 153 races and nearly 300 candidates for you to access online at www.thevoterguide.org/v/cedarrapids
The state legislators we elect will have to tackle a number of tough questions in office. We've gotten them on the record about some of the big ones:
What should state leaders do to balance the budget, or address the thorny issue of property tax reform?
Should Iowa follow Arizona's lead and pass stricter enforcement of illegal immigration law?
What, if any, safeguards should be added to make sure state government agencies are operating ethically, transparently and efficiently?
What about a public information board to enforce Iowa's sunshine laws?
Should school districts be required to report unethical teacher behavior involving students to law enforcement or the state board of licensers?
The voter's guide lists candidates' positions on those important issues and others, and includes biographical information about their backgrounds, education and experience.
Even if primary election day has sneaked up on you, there are many resources available to help you cast an informed vote.
So read up and get out to vote. Polls are open until 9 o'clock tonight.
