On the issue of K-12 school dress codes, there is no one right answer.
School leaders have different opinions about their usefulness and practicability. Parents and students are mixed in their support.
That's especially true at the state level, where a one-size-fits-all approach to the issue of dress codes just won't cut it.
Our state is home to a wide variety of schools of different size and culture, which deal with very different concerns. For some, dress codes may be a welcome - in fact, necessary - solution to problems of student bullying, gang activity and disrespect.
Others, not so much.
That's why the decision whether or not to implement dress codes in K-12 schools should be a local one.
State representatives appear poised to pass a bill that would leave it up to school districts whether or not to enforce dress codes for students. The House Education Committee overwhelmingly approved the measure.
It has been supported by the Urban Education Network of Iowa, school administrators and school boards. We join their number.
Schools must have the authority to create a safe, respectful learning environment - and school dress codes can be one important part of that environment.
