MORE BALANCE: The 25 women elected to the Iowa House and the 10 women who will serve in the Senate this session matches the record of 35 female lawmakers set in the 2009 session. That reflects victories by women in 60 percent of the 55 races in November involving females. No offense, men, but gender balance is desirable in crafting policies and laws that affect all Iowans.

INVESTED: Residents of Sumner, population about 2,000, contributed an average of more than $1,000 for every adult and child living in the town toward building a new, $20 million Community Memorial Hospital scheduled to open this morning.

HONORING THE DEAD: St. Ludmila Catholic Church parishioners worked to place headstones on 49 unmarked graves at St. John's Cemetery in Cedar Rapids.
