DENTAL CARE ADDITION: The Hands Free Medical Clinic at 400 12th St. SE in Cedar Rapids recently expanded its service by offering free dental care to patients who have no health insurance or who are uninsured. Eight dentists have volunteered their time, while dentist Jeffrey Akey helped organize the new service and serves as the volunteer director. Interest so far has been high, with a substantial waiting list. Call (319) 862-2636.

HONORED BY A HERO: Medal of Honor winner Sal Giunta, a Hiawatha native, returned to his high school alma mater Tuesday night, bringing a personalized award to Cedar Rapids Kennedy senior Abi Gray: the new $1,000 Sal Guinta Scholarship of Honor, which will come through the Brian LaVillette Scholarship Foundation and also pays tribute to two fallen comrades of Giunta.

FASTER RESPONSE: The recently built fire station in Iowa City has sharply improved response times on the city's northeast side, a major objective of the facility. Average response time is four minutes or less, beating the goal of six minutes or less at least 90 percent of the time.
