STILL SERVING: Sally Stutsman is leaving the Johnson County Board of Supervisors after 18 years of exemplary service. Fortunately, this well-respected public servant is taking her experience and skills to the Iowa House as a legislator next month.

BEAUTIFUL WORK: Eye 380, a group of volunteers that has overseen two landscaping projects along I-380 in Cedar Rapids, wants to continue its work by applying for a state grant and appealing to the community for support. The group sees I-380 as “our Main Street” and a reflection of the community that should be appealing. Trees Forever is handling donations. More information at www.Eye380.org.

NATIONAL LEADER: Iowa's newborn screening program that detects often rare but potentially dangerous inherited conditions continues to be a national leader. The program became mandatory about 30 years ago and now checks for more than 50 conditions that include sickle cell anemia, cystic fibrosis and PKU - disorders that would otherwise go undetected and untreated until problems arise. Screenings will add a check for severe combined immunodeficiencies in 2013.
