SKYPE-ING SCORES: Kudos to the Cedar Rapids Civil Service Commission for using Skype's online video service to interview the remaining seven candidates for police chief. The technology allowed “face to face” interaction without the cost of flying in the hopefuls.

SENIOR LIVING: Iowa City was ranked No. 2 nationally among small metro areas in a new index of the best communities for seniors, based on 78 factors related to successful and healthy aging. The Milken Institute, a non-profit think tank, did the study.

NEWBO LINEUP: The lineup of 21 permanent vendors announced by the new year-round NewBo City Market should generate lots of interest. The list offers a variety of out-of-the-ordinary merchants. The market is expected to open in late October.

GIVING BACK: Last Monday's second annual Zach Johnson Foundation Classic, founded by hometown pro golf star, raised more than $700,000 for the Kids on Course program that Zach and his wife, Kim, launched last year to help students at Harrison and Van Buren elementary schools.
