RAIN AT LAST: What a welcome sight. Significant rain fell twice within a week over much of Eastern Iowa for the first time in nearly two months. The drought's not over, but it's an encouraging break.

GOOD MOVE: We're glad to see that the Cedar Rapids City Council's Flood Recovery Committee will ask the full council to review the preferred flood protection plan and consider revisions. The original plan conceived months after the 2008 flood couldn't have predicted exactly what best suits today's needs in the affected neighborhoods.

COE RECORDS: Coe College posted a record number of first-year students - 418 - and its all-time largest number of full-time students - 1,338 - enrolled this fall following a record 3,096 applications. The incoming class has an average ACT score of 25.7 and includes students from 21 states and five foreign countries.

LESS IDLING: Linn County Public Health and more area schools are reminding drivers picking up students to not let their vehicle engines idle when stopped. Children are more vulnerable to low-hanging exhaust pollutants than adults.
