COOL PLAY: The Working Group Theatre, an Iowa City-based company, developed the plot for a new play that has an admirable goal: Make bullying not cool. It will debut in Iowa City-area junior high schools this month. The play was created after gathering input from dozens of students and teachers. This is the kind of grass roots effort we think can be much more effective at curbing bullying behavior than any federal or state edicts or programs. The play is a collaboration with the University of Iowa's Hancher Auditorium, Iowa City schools and the UI College of Public Health.

MORE KIDS INTO STEM: Kudos to the national Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers for creating Noche de Ciencias, an event aimed at getting more students of Latino background interested in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) careers. The first such event in Cedar Rapids, held at Coe College, drew about 100 kids last weekend.

LOWER IS BETTER: Despite more potent meth coming into Iowa and more child abuse related to drug abuse by adults, Iowa still has the third-lowest rate of illegal drug use in the nation. That should only stiffen Iowans' resolve to do even better.
