SCOUT TO THE RESCUE: Kudos to a Coralville youngster, Ryan Ruden, whose quick, informed response likely saved his mother from dying when she suffered a grand mal seizure in their home last January. Ryan was honored last Monday at a Boy Scout National Court of Honor ceremony. Cheers, too, for the Boy Scout emergency training that Ryan, then 12, used to help his mom.

PONSETI: The pioneering work of the late Dr. Ignacio Ponseti received a $1 million boost with a gift to the University of Iowa Foundation from UI graduates Bob Whitmore and Molly Osterhaus Whitmore of Minneapolis. Their donation will help fund the group that trains health-care professionals worldwide to use the clubfoot treatment known as the Ponseti method, an alternative to surgery.

CASA NEEDS YOU: Court Appointed Special Advocate volunteers make sure abused, neglected children in the court system have their needs met by the professionals involved with their cases. Good. Trouble is, there are only 27 CASA volunteers in place for Johnson, Linn and Jones counties. No special skills required, just some training time and a few hours of work each month for a year.
