GOVERNOR'S DEALING: While no trade deals have been announced yet, Gov. Terry Branstad returned from his mission to China all pepped up about the possibilities. Indeed, his and Iowa's connections with the giant nation and its expanding economic influence have led to expanded export markets for our state's farmers and manufacturers. No doubt that's likely to continue after the governor's recent trip.

TERRIFIC TENOR: Holbrook renewed its claim to fame and its rich heritage on Saturday, when Anthony Kearns, a founding member of the acclaimed The Irish Tenors, brought his talent to Old St. Michael's Church in the tiny Iowa County community. It was Kearns' fifth appearance since 2005 in the historic Irish settlement. His performances raise money for the preservation of the historic church, hall and cemetery.

FINDING HOMES: The Cedar Rapids municipal animal shelter beats the national average for placing the dogs and cats that it temporarily handles. Last year, 78 percent of all dogs and 39 percent of all cats were adopted out or reunited with owners. National averages were 56 percent for dogs and 15 percent for cats.
