Homers: What's going right

ELITE BANDS: Earning the right to play a concert for the annual convention of the Iowa Bandmasters Association is, in the high school musical world, a rough equivalent of claiming a state championship in a sport. The only two bands selected to play at this year's Bandmasters convention were both from Linn County: Lisbon and, for the third time in nine years, Cedar Rapids Washington. Both bands performed May 13.

SUPER SOCCER:
Back in the sports world, Cedar Rapids Xavier's girls claimed their fifth straight state high school soccer title on Saturday, winning the Class 1A title. A week earlier, three Cedar Rapids/Iowa City Corridor boys teams swept all three state soccer crowns: Iowa City West (second straight in 3A), Xavier (2A) and Iowa City Regina (1A, second in a row). Talk about dominance.

MATH MASTER: Matt Miller, Cedar Rapids Washington High School math teacher, is one of 103 recipients nationwide of the prestigious Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching. Considering the state and nation's shortage of math and science teachers, could Miller be cloned?
