ONLINE HELP: Public school teachers who can't get the materials and equipment they need for their students and classrooms can request help through DonorsChoose.org, an online charity. Requests are vetted. Then, individuals and companies can browse and donate any amount to those they want to support. DonorsChoose delivers the items. Cedar Rapids teachers have benefitted.

PERSEVERANCE: After navigating a long and winding road through protesting neighbors all the way to an Iowa Supreme Court ruling, Iowa City's new homeless shelter opened Saturday. The 70-bed Shelter House at 429 Southgate Ave. replaces the current facility that has 29 beds and often can't meet the demand. There's space for a dining area, 14 beds designated for veterans, training sessions and staff offices.

ON THE RISE: Hiawatha won its first state Revitalize Iowa's Sound Economy grant last week. The $1.4 million OK'd by the state transportation commission will improve a congested stretch of North Center Point Road. The project also boosts the city's long-range case for a new Interstate 380 interchange at Tower Terrace Road.
