SAVED: Saving historic structures as the medical district is developed has become an issue. Wednesday, a 1906 Arts and Crafts-style home eligible for the National Register of Historic Places, was lifted from its home at 1113 Second Ave. SE and moved toward its new site several blocks away. Green Development of Iowa City plans to renovate the house for office spaces. St. Luke's Hospital contributed $17,000 toward moving expenses, the amount that would have been spent on demolition.

STURDY VOLUNTEERS: April 16 was miserable, cold, snow and wind, yet 60 volunteers braved snow, driving wind and cold, and picked up 61 bags of litter from Cedar Rapids streets as part of a city cleanup initiative. Many neighborhoods postponed. Of course, any day is a good day to pick up trash - and stop tossing it.

KIDS & GARDENS: The local food movement is moving into many local schools. From using greenhouses built by volunteers to class lessons that incorporate information about gardening, students are learning more about growing food and making healthier food choices. Hopefully, it also will reduce obesity among our youth.
