BRING IT ON: Many area students seek academic challenges. For the third year in a row, Cedar Rapids Washington High School led the state in the ratio of Advance Placement exams taken by students enrolled in AP classes that offer more academic rigor and a chance to earn college credit. Eastern Iowa schools claimed the top four spots and 17 of the top 50 in Iowa.

HELPING A LADY: Retirees from Sheet Metal Workers Local 263 in Cedar Rapids are volunteering time and talent to repair the flood-damaged Lady Liberty statue on May's Island.

TO BE MISSED: Zach Melton has been widely credited with fixing serious internal management problems at the Cedar Valley Humane Society after becoming executive director in 2009. The only downside is that his work drew the attention of an Alabama veterinary hospital, which made him a job offer he couldn't refuse.
