GOOD BUY: Johnson County supervisor chair Pat Harney rounded up businesses and individuals to bid on and buy a county fair champion carcass heifer to be processed and donated to the Crisis Center's food bank. It couldn't come at a better time. Many food pantries are short of supplies and donations as demand has risen.

CLASSIC RESPONSE: Monday's Zach Johnson Foundation Classic raised about a half-million dollars, which Zach and his wife promptly matched. Money from the event will go toward the new Kids on Course program founded by the Cedar Rapids pro golf star's foundation. It helps local at-risk kids develop lifelong skills and provides new learning opportunities.

WITHOUT A HITCH: Explosives crumpled the First Avenue Parkade on July 30 to help make way for the new convention center complex. The demolition by D.W. Zinser Company with coordination by city officials was, by all reports, flawless.

SIDS PREVENTION: University of Iowa researchers were part of a team that reported a major breakthrough toward preventive treatment for sudden infant death syndrome.
