PROTECTING THE BIG RIVER: A federal program marking its 25th anniversary has helped preserve the Upper Mississippi River ecosystem, one of the nation's most extensive. At a cost of about $500 million, the 54 projects completed so far have benefitted Iowa the most - 19 covered 26,000 acres in waters bordering Iowa. Seven more Iowa projects are planned. The work helps balance the Upper Mississippi's environment and recreation use with its value as a navigation system.

MORE LIFESAVERS: In 2008, the Cedar Rapids Police Department issued seven lifesaving awards to officers whose action demonstrates skill that helps save a life. So far this year, there have been 20 such awards presented. All officers are certified in CPR and carry defibrillators. They are among first responders who assist with medical emergencies.

SEED SAVINGS: Cedar Rapids city crews last week harvested about 200 pounds of prairie grass and wildflower seed from Indian Creek Nature Center's well-established prairie for use along the new Prairie Park Fishery's trail. It would cost up to $4,000 to buy the seed from a private
seller.
