HONOR EVENT: Yet another Honor Flight out of The Eastern Iowa Airport last Tuesday took about 80 World War II veterans to visit war memorials in Washington, D.C., especially the one built in their honor and dedicated in May 2004. Most of them never would have made the trip if not for the Honor Flight Network. With so few veterans from that war still alive, the Honor Flight organization is preparing to focus on Korean War veterans next. It operates on private donations and other support from individuals, groups and companies. To donate or get more information, visit http://eihonorflight.org/. Mailing address is P.O. Box 10704, Cedar Rapids, IA 52410.

SUMMER LUNCH: During the school year, students from low-income families are provided free lunch. During the summer, not so. In Marion, a project called Feeding Lunch to Youth is one of the biggest initiatives in the area to help such families when classes are not in session. The volunteer program, sponsored by and based at First United Methodist Church in Marion, serves lunch to an average of 350 kids a day. In Cedar Rapids, the local Meals on Wheels program launched a similar program this summer.
