Homers: What's going right
Jan. 24, 2010 11:13 pm
BEST NOTICED: An Iowa Senate committee last week rejected a proposal requiring government legal notices be posted on Internet sites only. That means newspapers can continue to publish them. We're happy about that mostly because people are more apt to see the notices in a newspaper. A November survey showed 71 percent of Iowans want notices in their local newspaper and more than half frequently read them. And 57 percent said they have never read such information on government Web sites.

OUT OF TRAGEDY: After Landon and Lisa Taylor's 6-month-old baby Emrys died in his crib in October 2008, the Cedar Rapids couple were arrested for child neglect. Charges were dropped, and Lisa wrote the federal government about problems they had with the crib. The result? A recall of 635,000 cribs made by Dorel Asia. The faulty drop sides can trap and suffocate babies. Now other babies are safer.

WILD BILL'S IS BACK: Wild Bill's Coffee Shop, named after Bill Sackter, the inspirational, mentally challenged man who ran the shop until his death, reopened on the University of Iowa campus, North Hall. It's also a UI School of Social Work learning project.
