HISTORIC PRESERVATION: Three historic redevelopment projects moved forward last week.
Cedar Rapids City Council members approved economic development incentives for the Sokol Gymnasium property at 417 Third St. SE in downtown and the Commonwealth Apartments, 1400 Second Ave. SE and launched its property-disposal process for the city-owned Knutson Building, located on Valor Way SW. We're glad to see the buildings - and the city history and character they embody - will be preserved and put to use.

HABLA ESPANOL: We're glad to see that Linn County Auditor Joel Miller plans to hire a bilingual employee to fill a vacant election clerk position.
Spanish is the most commonly spoken foreign language in the county, and this move will help ensure those who have not yet mastered English will have equal access to important public information.

ONE PERSON'S TRASH: It's time again for Iowa City's annual Rummage in the Ramp event, held at the Chauncey Parking Ramp. The event coincides with the end of the lease year for the city's many renters - a time which used to be marked by piles of furniture, clothing and personal items heaped on every curb.
The sale diverted 30 tons of refuse last year; 170 tons since the event began. Proceeds go to local non-profits. The sale runs until Aug. 3.
