PAYMENT RECEIVED: The City of Cedar Rapids received the first installment of $263 million in state funds that have been allocated for flood-protection systems. The $1.5 million will go into a special revenue fund, city officials say. They expect quarterly payments to continue for as many as 20 years.

LEADERS CONVENE: The National Governors Association announced it will host its 2016 summer meeting in Des Moines, choosing the state for its accommodation and venue options, transportation, volunteers and 'overall appeal.” The association's 2005 meeting, also held here, attracted governors from more than 30 states.

ROCK ON: Independence landmark The Gayla Ballroom has been inducted into the Iowa Rock ‘n' Roll Music Association Hall of Fame. In its heyday, the facility, which opened in 1955, was known for its fine dance floor and attracted some of the era's biggest stars.
