Posted on the Camp Courageous website: “ ... A man of incredible integrity, Leo Greco has left a wonderful legacy at Camp Courageous and throughout the world.”
Greco's music, personality and service to others touched several generations of Eastern Iowans. The World War II veteran, who died Tuesday, and his band drew crowds at ballrooms across a 10-state region in the 1950s and '60s. The group performed weekly broadcasts on as many as six television stations and 23 radio stations.
Greco began work in radio sales at KCRG-AM in 1969, then WMT in 1971. As host of WMT's “Variety Time,” he was the icon of a popular program for more than 37 years.
He tirelessly, enthusiastically played requests from listeners with anniversaries and birthdays.
Welcomed at nursing homes and charitable events, Greco used his celebrity status to serve others more than himself. Non-profit organizations such as Camp Courageous and their clients are indebted. He connected with people in their places.
Radio and Eastern Iowa will miss this kind, joyful and giving man.
Leo Greco
