HOW TO FIGURE: Estimating fuel costs has become a very difficult budget-planning task for government officials, business owners and families when the market is so volatile, as it has been in recent years and months as prices flirted with $4 a gallon. Unfortunately, that trend is likely to continue indefinitely.

NOT AGAIN: State Rep. Dwayne Alons, R-Hull, last week tried to resurrect an effort to impeach four Iowa Supreme Court justices who were part of a unanimous decision striking down the state's ban on same-sex marriage in 2009. He wanted to advance last year's House resolutions to impeach Justices Mark Cady, Brent Appel, Daryl Hecht and David Wiggins as a follow-up to their three colleagues ousted by voters in November. Alons' call came a day after those three justices - Marsha Ternus, Michael Streit and David Baker - were named winners of the John F. Kennedy Profile in Courage Award for honoring Iowa's constitution in their 2009 ruling. Thankfully, Alons' bid drew no supportive action and shouldn't have. Grounds for impeaching justices, as outlined in the state constitution, are for violating the law or their oath of office - not ruling on the constitution and laws.
