34 AND COUNTING: At least 34 fires involving flood-damaged homes, garages or sheds in Cedar Rapids have been recorded since the disaster of 2008. The latest was Wednesday. Fire officials say all of the fires have involved vacant or abandoned properties, which make easier targets and likely were caused by human action, intentional or accidental. Meanwhile, the fire department's average cost to put out each blaze is about $3,000, not including follow-up investigation. Citizens, call the fire department or police if you see suspicious activity.

OFFENSIVE GEESE: Cedar Rapids city officials say the number of geese within city limits has increased so much - estimated at nearly 2,000 birds now - that they've become a nuisance, especially their feces. An ordinance to ban feeding waterfowl is being reviewed, as is allowing goose hunting in certain areas of the city.

SCARCE VOTERS: Another pathetic election turnout in Tuesday's Iowa primary. Among the 1st District's half-million registered voters, fewer than 37,000 voted; in the 2nd District, fewer than 49,000 of about 551,000. Do we need a new format?
