HISTORIC BRIDGE LOST: Arson is suspected in a fire that destroyed most of the historic Bunker Mill Bridge in Kalona last Sunday. Built in 1887, it spans the English River and for years was the only convenient way to travel between Kalona and Richmond. City officials have been planning a bike/walking trail from Kalona to Richmond, and the bridge was a vital part of that plan.

YOUTH HOME POLICIES: Staff psychologists paint a disturbing picture of the Iowa Juvenile Home in Toledo, a state-run facility that provides housing and services to children with behavioral problems, Their concern include “no coherent program” of treatment. Disability Rights Iowa is investigating the facility, and public records show that youths allegedly have been placed in isolation cells for weeks or longer, a practice that has been used for at least 17 years.

UNTIMELY: Larry Nowlan, a Vermont artist who created four noted bronze sculptures on the University of Iowa campus, including one of 1939 Heisman Trophy winner Nile Kinnick, died Aug. 1 at age 48 - just as his national notoriety was soaring. He left a wife and two young children.
