NO PAINT: A worldwide shortage of some chemicals used in road paint is being felt locally. Some streets and highways in Linn County and across the state are seeing delays in painting road markings. That could compromise safety for drivers. It's also driving up the costs of paint for local and state governments.

TONS AND TONS: Another downside of the 2008 flood: More than 150,000 tons of debris from damaged and demolished homes and other structures had been hauled to the Cedar Rapids and County Road Home (Marion) landfills through June 4, the Cedar Rapids/Linn County Solid Waste Agency says. And with demolition under way at the former Sinclair meatpacking plant since May, more than 17,000 tons of debris have been taken to the Cedar Rapids landfill. Altogether, that's more than 23,000 truck loads. Could we have recycled more of it?

IN THE DARK: Some independent non-profit groups engaged in political advertising before the Iowa primary election without disclosing donors, taking advantage of loopholes in state and federal campaign laws on disclosure. Boo. Voters have a right to know who's trying to influence them.
